This is quite the film. Baby Driver is a great blend of comedy and hard core action with a distinctive style that I will never forget. First off, the film has a lot of great characters and everyone really does well in their roles. The cinematography and editing that went into this movie are what really make it shine though. Every scene looks like it was meticulously directed in order to coincide with the beat of the music, which plays a really big role in the film's general atmosphere. It makes me want to watch it again because there are so many little things I may have missed on my first time around regarding how scenes play out with the mixing of general sound and the tracks playing in the background. Things like lyrics popping up in the background and car alarms subtly in rhythm with the beat are fun to spot.
The story was actually really simplistic but at the same time there was some depth given to some of the characters, mostly Baby, that I appreciated. Most the character stuff is done through quick flashbacks or one liners but that's because the film constantly moves at an exhilarating pace. This is a good thing but at the same time there are characters like the main love interest that lack a lot of personality which is a shame because that's supposed to be the soul of the second half like why you should care for what Baby is doing. The girlfriend, Deborah, was definitely the weakest link, which made the third act not have as much emotional weight as it should have had. Other characters also make decisions during the end of the movie that lack much reason but that's because there isn't much down time for deeper conversations during the adventure.
Even though the story may only have scratched the surface, lots of things happen that are unexpected during the second half which I loved so it wasn't as cliche as it couldn't been. Not to mention the action scenes were brilliantly shot and it didn't feel like I was just watching any old car chases like how monotonous they can get in the Fast and Furious franchise. Overall this movie was a little style over substance but the style was so unique and well done that I can look past some of its development flaws. Honestly, I had so much fun with it I want to go watch it again. If you haven't already please go out and watch Baby Driver because it really is something else.
