Dunkirk is a difficult movie to review because in my eyes I don't feel like it can really be thought of as what we usually think of as a movie. The reason for this is because after walking out of the theatre, I didn't feel anything. I felt as though I had just watched a collection of scenes of the events that happened during that time in history. There weren't really any characters with any background or development. You never learn about any of the people you are watching and there is barely any dialogue in the film as well. All of the scenes are also not told sequentially. Normally, I would say the movie sucked and it was hollow and lifeless, however, Christopher Nolan said that he wasn't trying to make a regular movie and that this was supposed be a cinematic experience of the events of Dunkirk.
This means that all my flaws with the film were intended by Nolan. My flaws with the movie exist because he didn't try to do what movies like this normally do. So does that mean that this movie is bad? It really depends on what you are watching it for and if you are okay with it being more about the experience of the event than the people involved. I personally wanted characters that I could attach to so I could've cared more about what's going on. Since I didn't get that I found the movie boring and lifeless. However, someone else may like what Nolan was going for and found the movie visually brilliant and encapsulating. In conclusion, I would only recommend the film to those who are interested in seeing the event in a realistic take and not to those who think they will be taken on some hero's journey like other war films.
